Medicine Production in Hospital with AR and Hololens
The following question came from R. (Remco) Janssens MHA, Director of Pharmacy Operations at ASZ:
“Can ASZ utilize Augmented Reality through Hololens to increase productivity and be prepared for emergencies (such as large-scale staff shortage in the department)?”
ArtiShock’s response: Yes, that is possible! Based on previous cases, we have the experience of supporting staff through the use of Augmented Reality.
The results were already astonishing. There was a significant improvement in productivity and quality, and employee satisfaction had also greatly increased. You can refer to the Gefco case for more details: See the Gefco case.
Approach for Medication Production with Augmented Reality
- First, a (relatively simple) process is selected. In this case, it is the preparation of Meropenem.
- The preparation always requires 2 individuals: one person always checks the other. We conducted a baseline assessment, including a video analysis of the current process.
- We translated the process into a spreadsheet and then created a digital/visual version with a series of interactive screens combined with 3D holographic visuals.
- The augmented 3D material demonstrates the procedure, supported by texts and selections.
The Augmented Reality in the Hololens displays multiple screens that demonstrate the manufacturing process of this medication. It emphasizes the control of materials/ingredients used and the quantities involved.
Preliminary Conclusion of this AR Test:
- Approaching the current process in a different way leads to efficiency improvements. (Example: information about a child is not necessary for an adult patient.) This is already the first benefit gained.
- Analysis of the process can efficiently distribute subtasks to other locations (example: remote control function) or improve control tasks (automatic registration of materials/ingredients used).
- Increased labor productivity by up to 100%.
- Tasks can be quickly taken over by, for example, nurses using the Hololens (consider emergency situations like pandemics).
